Gurdan Thomas brings high quality, low tech and unusual songwriting with a generous pinch of Oompah.
This 4 (sometimes 5) piece likeable yet chaotic band performs songs woven around quirky texts and subjects, arrangements inventively painted across their own unconformist musical landscape with the tone-colours of the human voice, charango, accordeon, ukulele, guitar, Helikon (Tuba), cornet (Trumpet), piano and other percussion.
Sometimes a little crazy and with their Zappaesque attitude, always inventive, often bursting with their unfeigned, unfettered high energy acoustic driven ball of sound and at times vunerable and heart-breakingly fragile in quieter moments, sometimes simply drawing listeners into their infectious ryhthm infested dance but always remaining ‘Gurdan Thomas’.
Comparisons have however been drawn to Beirut, Ben Folds, The Band, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, Andrew Bird, Colin McIntyre, The Divine Comedy, The Housemartins and The Beautiful South.
The band currently has one remaining Englishman, Gurdan Besrywan Thomas (lead vox, guitar, ukulele, piano, cornet) along with a ‘pot-pourri’ of European musicians collected during the band leader’s musical and geographic explorations – Sandra Hollstein (accordeon, voice, melodika), Carles Camos (ES) (Piano, E-Bass) Martin Habersetzer (Tuba) Michael Hohm (ukulele, voice, charango, cornet, horn, melodika, tuvan throat singing) and Jo Url (Drums).
The band are currently signed to German label Beste! Unterhaltung and currently working on their new album ‘Of Pigs & Pirates’ with Deutsches Ethno Music Award winner Dine Doneff (GR) working with them as producer.
