Gurdan Besrywan Thomas
Sometimes known as Ian for some strange reason related to an idea his parents invented. The leader and songwriter of the band. Gurdan founded the group in 2006, which back then numbered a total of 1 player (Mr. Gurdan). Gurdan studied composition at Birmingham Conservatoire with Prof. Andrew Downes, Dr. Mark Lockett and the late great Indian Composer John Mayer. He is a keen cook and is developing a range of ridiculously hot sauces. He has spent the last 7 years immersed in the folks musics of Bavaria and wider Europe and the world - usually with a dented, battered and borrowed Tuba in tow. Other groups include Jodelfisch, Lischkapelle, Schicksals Combo and Derabeudisches Orkestor Oberfranken.
The newest member to the group, but a huge music fan of an equally huge range of music both from the local music scene and internationally with Frank Zappa being a particular favourite. Michi is constantly adding new instruments to his repertoire, currently playing ukuele, charango, cornet, horn, melodica and Tuvan throat singing within Gurdan Thomas, he also plays guitar and writes his own songs under his secret solo project ‘Brunfthai Pelota’ and is currently developing accordeon technique. A genius in the studio when it comes to producing, mixing and messing with all sorts of interesting recording devices and gadgets he produced and mixed the latest GT release ‘The Dark Side Of Gurdan Thomas’. He is a connoisseur of fine wines and a keen mountain man.
A passionate devotion to music particularly around the fields of Jazz, Folk Music, Pop, Chanson and the avantguarde both as fan and artist has lead Sandra into many projects and will no doubt continue to do so. With a beautiful voice and talent for accordeon, piano and a wide range of other sound making devices she’s been a core member of Gurdan Thomas for some years. She was a founder member of Jodelfisch and Voiceacappela and is often researching old traditional music and finding inventive ways to arrange and/or combine them. She is an avid reader (fluently in both English and German!) and enjoys enthusiastically the good food that Mr. Gurdan cooks and works it all off with cold water swimming and Yoga. She also has her own Solo songwriting project under the unusual name of ‘Sandra Hollstein’.
Having met Mr. Gurdan at a Musikantenstammtisch session at the Hofbräuhaus Regine very soon became the bands Fat bass lady, athough she is not in the least bit overweight. Petite but full of energy and power, she travels in her tiny car with her giant brass instrument, she is a fan of very small or very large things and seemingly nothing in between - she also invested in a great big fire wagon to be used as a band van - his name is ‘Seppl’. Regine is a fan of extreme sports and activities, she worked for a while as a professional wire trapeze acrobat and can often be found jumping out of helicopters, canoeing, climbing and this summer she walked from her house in Munich all the way to Venice!
